a flimsy moment

a flimsy moment (2007)

Sound Installation für und mit Blumen/Bäume

Sensoren Arbeit

UA 30.05.2007, Lincoln Park Conservatory, Chicago (USA)

a flimsy moment (2007)

sound installation for flowers

sensor work

Premiere 30.05.07, Lincoln Park Conservatory, Chicago (USA)

«a flimsy moment» uses lightweight sensors that interface with a computer to detect slight movements made by flowers, and translates these movements into sounds played back into the flowers’ environment.

Six motion sensors are on the leaves and petals of the flowers, and six loudspeakers are placed in proximity to the flowers. As the plants move, the sensors trigger multiple sound samples that interchange and weave in a constantly changing composition. Each sound sample is selected to be harmonious with the others; the combination of sounds invites unforseen possibilities and coincidences. The starting point for the composition was the idea of creating a harmonious and tender audio field, a quiet and intimate experience for listeners and viewers to observe subtle changes in motion and sound composition.

«a flimsy moment» is a work-in-progress for the artist, an investigation into how the sensors through their interface might have a correspondence with the flowers’ development, and how the resulting sounds might influence the flowers’ growth. It is intended to be a work that continues to grow in the future.
